Placemats
In an effort to conserve the water required to wash tablecloths, the French invented placemats during WWI. When American servicemen returned home from the war, and showed their wives the unique tablewear they found in France, the placemat's place on the American table was secured.

Mustard
Mustard is France's first documented condiment. Recipes for mustard were found in the dijon region dating back to 1345. The first documented condiment in America is ranch dressing with recipes dating back to 1733.
