Elevators as Morality Play
In his spare time, Edmund Otis, the inventor of the elevator was a minister. He was very concerned with heaven and hell. So concerned was he that even today, the indicator lights outside the elevator indicate white for up and red for down.

Little Known Etiquette
Polite etiquette dictates that in case the cable snaps, a man is supposed to get into the elevator before the woman.
In order for a woman to avoid climbing over the hump in the middle of a cab's back seat, the man is supposed to get in the cab first followed by the woman.
As revolving glass doors are often heavy, the man is supposed to enter the door before the woman and push it for the both of them.
