Where wedding parties come from

A long time ago when communities were separated by larger tracts of land young men would travel to neighboring communities to ask for permission to marry young ladies. Unfortunately, they would often be attacked by thieves and robbers along the way. As protection for the trip, the groom would select the people he would most like to have on his side as protection. This is where concept of the best man and the groomsmen come from.
